Distortion That Rocks Music Info: Classical Music

The term “classical music” means many different things. In general, when someone refers to classical music, they actually mean music composed in a traditional style and meant for serious listeners. This can include music composed in recent years with a classic style, or even styles that precluded the true Classical period. When the term is capitalized, it usually means the specific period is being referred to. When the term is not capitalized, it is usually meant in the broader term of traditional music from many periods including the Classical period.

The Renaissance was a turning point for music in Europe and created the stylistic signatures of what we call classical music. The Renaissance period gave way to the Baroque period. The Baroque period is where we start to see the familiar classical instruments such as violins and cellos, as well as the counterpoint melodies that cause one to think of classical music. The Baroque period is marked for steady, almost mechanical rhythms. While it lacks tempo or volume dynamics it remains interesting because of the complex harmonies and use of tension and release. Vivaldi and J.S. Bach, often called Classical composers, were actually from the Baroque period.
